Introducing Social Group Play Therapy

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

We are introducing Group Play Therapy for children ages 5 to 12 years old!

Our Group Play Therapy sessions are designed to be a developmentally responsive, play-based mental health intervention for young children ages 5 to 12 who are experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, and relational challenges.

Why Group Play Therapy?

Childhood is a critical period in an individual's overall development. It is the period in which children learn many adaptive behaviours and communication skills necessary for the next period of their lives such as adolescence and adulthood. Having strong social-emotional skills leads to success in the future. Group Play Therapy aims to strengthen these skills which often translate in other areas of your child's life such as academic success which require not only their cognitive abilities but social and emotional competence

Core social-emotional development includes a set of skills such as

  • self-awareness

  • understanding of others feelings

  • managing their own emotions

  • the ability to express their emotions in a constructive manner

  • self-regulation

Children with strong social-emotional skills become successful at preventing or mitigating physiological stress and social issues by effectively communicating with both the adults in their lives as well as their peers. Through play and group play therapy, children learn many of these somewhat basic social-emotional skills to communicate and express their feelings.

Who is group Play Therapy for?

These sessions are appropriate for children who struggle with peer or sibling relationships, as well as experience emotional and behavioral issues.

During our Group Play Therapy sessions, your child will experience social interactions with 2-3 other children which will introduce to your child ways to learn and practice social and coping skills.

Benefits of group Play Therapy?

Child developmental experts believe that a child's emotional intelligence develops through their learning, awareness, and practice. When your child is learning to identify emotions or express their emotions they are also learning how to regulate themselves and communicate.

In Group Play Therapy children are to learn what it means to have empathy for others, through the connections and relationships formed within their group play therapy sessions. It is a space for them to explore, express, and experience all these feelings, ideas, thoughts, and these positive experiences also do wonders for their self-esteem. The sessions are facilitated by a qualified play therapist. This makes the experience very natural and real so children are able to learn from each other.

These skills then become very useful for your child's first day at a new school or extracurricular activity. As they grow older, they are also better equipped to handle complex social situations and deal well with the stresses that can sometimes come with it.
